Online Therapy in Florida: How It Works and Who It Helps
By Crystal Riley, LCSW
Online therapy in Florida is real therapy. You meet with a licensed Florida therapist over secure video, from wherever you feel comfortable, and the work itself is exactly what you would expect from good therapy. For most people it is just as effective as any other format, and far easier to actually keep on the calendar.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and my whole practice is telehealth. That means I see clients across the entire state of Florida, from Pensacola to the Keys, without anyone having to sit in traffic on I-4 or take a half day off work to make an appointment. When people first ask me about online therapy, the questions are almost always the same. Does it actually work over a screen? Is it private? Will it feel awkward? Those are fair questions, so let's walk through them honestly.
What is online therapy, really?
Online therapy, also called teletherapy or telehealth, is a therapy session that happens over a secure video connection. You log in from your phone, tablet, or computer. I am on the other end, fully present with you. We talk, I listen, we do the actual work of therapy together.
The only thing that changes is the delivery. The relationship, the confidentiality, the clinical approach, and my license are all exactly the same. Florida law lets a licensed clinician see any client physically located in the state, which is why I can work with someone in Orlando one hour and someone in Tampa or Jacksonville the next. What matters legally is where you are sitting during the session, not where I am.
Does online therapy actually work?
This is the big one, and the honest answer is yes for most people and most concerns. A large body of research over the last decade has found that video therapy produces outcomes comparable to traditional therapy settings for common issues like anxiety, depression, and trauma. Clients build the same trust, do the same emotional work, and get the same relief.
In practice, I sometimes see people open up faster online, not slower. There is something about being in your own space, on your own couch, with your own dog nearby, that helps the nervous system settle. You are not psyching yourself up to walk into an unfamiliar place and sit and wait, getting more anxious by the minute. You are already somewhere safe.
Even trauma-focused work translates well. I use EMDR, an evidence-based approach for trauma and PTSD, and there are tools designed specifically to make the bilateral stimulation part work smoothly over video. If you are curious how that works, I wrote more about it in what EMDR really is.
Who is a good fit for online therapy in Florida?
Telehealth is not automatically right for every single situation, but it is a strong fit for a lot more people than you might expect. You may be a good candidate if:
- You have a busy schedule and a lunch break is the only realistic window you have
- You live somewhere in Florida without many local therapists who specialize in what you need
- You have anxiety, trauma, depression, low self-esteem, or relationship stress you are ready to work on
- Getting across town to an appointment is exactly the kind of friction that keeps you from going at all
- You are a parent, a caregiver, or a shift worker and privacy at a set time is easier at home than across town
- You simply feel more yourself in your own space
There are moments when a higher level of care makes more sense than weekly online sessions, such as active safety concerns or needs that call for hands-on medical support. Part of my job in a first conversation is being honest about that. If online therapy is not the right fit for what you are carrying, I will tell you and help you find the right direction.
What can online therapy help with?
The range is wide, because the therapy itself is the same as it would be anywhere else. In my practice, the most common reasons people reach out for telehealth include:
- Anxiety, overthinking, and that low hum of stress that never fully switches off
- Trauma and PTSD, including experiences you have never said out loud to anyone
- Depression and the flat, heavy, unmotivated seasons of life
- Self-esteem and the inner critic that talks to you in a voice you would never use on a friend
- Relationship patterns, boundaries, and people-pleasing
- Life transitions, grief, and the identity shifts that come with big change

Is online therapy private and secure?
Yes. I use a secure, encrypted video platform built for healthcare, not a regular consumer video app. Your sessions are confidential and protected by the same laws and ethics that govern therapy of any kind.
The piece that is in your hands is finding a private spot on your end. Most people use a bedroom, a spare room, or a parked car on a break. Headphones help. If privacy at home is genuinely hard, that is worth naming early, and we can problem solve it together. You would be surprised how many people have their most honest sessions sitting in a driveway.
How do I start online therapy in Florida?
It is simpler than most people expect. The usual path looks like this:
- Reach out. You book a free consultation or send a message describing what is going on, in as much or as little detail as you want.
- We meet for a short consult. This is a no-pressure conversation to see if we are a good fit. You get to feel out my style, and I get to understand what you are looking for.
- We schedule your first full session. I send you a secure link. You click it at your appointment time. That is the whole setup.
- We get to work, at your pace. Early sessions are about understanding your history and building trust before we go anywhere difficult.
If you are still weighing whether virtual sessions are right for you specifically, I go deeper on that in is online therapy right for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to live in Orlando to work with you?
Not at all. I am based in Central Florida, but because everything is telehealth, I can see anyone physically located in Florida. Whether you are in Miami, Gainesville, Fort Myers, or a small town most people cannot find on a map, if you are in the state, we can work together.
What technology do I need?
A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a reasonably stable internet connection is enough. You do not need to download anything complicated. I send a secure link, you click it, and you are in. If tech nerves are part of what worries you, we can do a quick test run so the first session feels easy.
Is online therapy cheaper than traditional therapy?
Fees are usually the same, because it is the same clinical work with the same licensed therapist. What telehealth often saves you is the hidden cost of getting there: gas, parking, childcare, and the time off work it takes to get to an appointment and back.
Will it feel awkward on video?
Maybe for the first few minutes, the same way the first few minutes of any new therapy can feel a little stiff. It fades fast. Within a session or two, most people forget the screen is even there and just feel like they are talking to someone who gets it.
Do you offer anything other than video sessions?
My practice is fully online, so all of our work together happens through secure video. For a lot of people that turns out to be the feature, not the compromise, because it is the version of therapy they can actually sustain week after week.
Ready to try therapy that fits your life?
I offer anxiety, trauma, and EMDR therapy through secure online sessions across Florida, with evening and weekend availability. If you have been meaning to start for a while, this can be the easy part.
